Andrew's Story:  A Lesson On Trust

If there is one lesson that I pray can be learned from my life it is simply this- Trust in the Lord!

My life was shattered because I did not trust Him, but then restored and blessed beyond imagination once I did trust Him.

I saw and experienced many things growing up that made it difficult for me to trust anyone.  Family members abusing drugs, alcohol, verbal and sexual abuse by a family member are a few things I experienced in my family.

At the age of thirteen years old, my family life, as I knew it, ended when my father divorced my mother to marry another woman.  My mother decided to move eight-hundred miles away and threatened suicide if I did not come with her. She had a nervous breakdown and I spent the couple of years trying to care for her. There were many times I heard my mother talk about suicide and this was hard to bear at my young age.  The love I had once for my father turned to hate for what had happened to my family and especially my mother.  I certainly did not trust my parents to do right by me any longer and there the trust was broken. I trusted nobody.

I went to a Christian school in high school.  I learned to play to part dress and act the way a Christian should but only when it suited me. I never fully surrendered to Christ. I did not want to trust Him anymore then I wanted to trust anybody else.

During this time I began to drink. Drinking helped me feel normal, happy, and complete.  In my twenties I received treatment for depression and anxiety, but nothing worked. The only time I felt like I could cope is when I was drinking. I drank so much that I literally could not function without drinking. I even remember drinking before having heart surgery for which could have killed me but I was spared. I was a loser. At this point in my life I lost everything.

By my thirties I hit my own rock bottom. I had no home, no car, no friends, no life, and my health was failing. I knew I needed to make a change in my life. I began to feel the Holy Spirit of God tugging at my heart. My family wanted me to go to another rehab but I insisted I go to a faith based program.  Thanks to my Aunt I found Freedom Village. She found this place on the internet and remembered one of the singing groups had come to her church.

It took a week to get to Freedom Village but only took one night for me to finally trust Jesus as my savior.  I trusted Him, and He cleansed me and I will never be the same again. Jesus has taken away my pain and given me joy and peace.  I am now serving God full time here at Freedom Village.  God has also, restored my relationships with my family and given me a new family here as well. There is nothing he can’t do and all I have to do is trust him.
